Reef Manta Ray

Mobula alfredi

About the species

Each manta ray has a unique spot pattern on its belly, like a fingerprint

The Reef Manta Ray is one of the most magnificent creatures in the Maldives, with wingspans reaching up to 5 meters. These gentle giants are filter feeders, gracefully gliding through the water as they consume plankton. Unlike their larger cousin, the Oceanic Manta Ray, Reef Mantas tend to stay closer to coastlines and are frequently seen at cleaning stations where small fish remove parasites. The Maldives is one of the best places in the world to encounter these majestic animals, particularly at famous sites like Hanifaru Bay during the southwest monsoon season. Manta Rays are highly intelligent, possessing the largest brain-to-body ratio of any fish.
